Colour tattoos: what to know before you book

What your artist will raise at the consultation.

Skin tone changes the palette

Every colour is seen through your skin. Your artist adjusts the palette so the piece reads the way the reference does on you, not on a screen.

Sun and placement decide how long it lasts

Yellows and pinks fade first in the sun, so SPF 50+ on healed colour is the biggest thing you control. Fingers, hands and feet fade fastest, and complimentary touch-ups there are not guaranteed. If a colour will not hold where you want it, your artist says so before the stencil goes on.

Cover-ups love colour

Dense colour and clever composition are how most old tattoos disappear. See the before and afters on the cover-up page.

Colour tattoo questions

How much does a colour tattoo cost in Halifax?

Colour is charged by time: $150 to $250 an hour, depending on the artist, before tax. Large or highly detailed custom work can cost more per hour. Packing colour takes longer than black and grey over the same area, so the same design usually needs more time in colour. The price list by size shows the typical hours for small, medium and large pieces.

Does colour hurt more than black and grey?

Colour packing takes longer over the same area, so a colour session can feel longer, but the needle is the same. Breaks are built in.

How long does colour take to heal?

The surface settles in two to four weeks like any tattoo. Expect it to look cloudy around day 14 while new skin forms; the colour sharpens over the following weeks.

Do you do Japanese and anime pieces?

Yes. Koi, katanas, bonsai, kitsune masks and anime characters are all in the gallery above.

Send the colour pieces you liked

Save two or three with the heart and send them with your reference; your artist plans the palette for your skin tone, not for a screen.
